The decisions behind it are written up in my build notes for this project.

The Astra Creative sky view on a desktop browser: a night sky dense with stars, the Milky Way sweeping across the right-hand side, constellation lines joining the brighter stars, the Moon labelled, and a control bar for planets, constellations, Milky Way and deep-sky layers.
The Astra Creative solar system view on a phone: Jupiter half-lit by the Sun, its cloud bands and Great Red Spot visible, with orbit lines behind and compact controls for choosing a planet.

The real sky, rendered in the browser

An interactive planetarium and a flyable solar system, built in the browser with no plugin or install. Every star, planet and moon sits where the data says it is, taken from a star catalogue, an ephemeris and spacecraft photography. Where something isn't known, the page says so on screen instead of filling the gap.

The sky from here

  • Any place on Earth, any date from 50,000 BC to 50,000 AD
  • 119,625 stars from the HYG catalogue, precessed over the whole range
  • Sun, Moon, planets, 609 deep-sky objects and the Milky Way
  • Constellation figures and adjustable light pollution
  • Every view is a shareable link that restores the same sky

The solar system

  • Fly from the Sun to Neptune, with positions from an ephemeris
  • Twenty-two moons wrapped in real spacecraft surface maps
  • Saturn's and Uranus's rings built from their measured edges
  • Asteroid belt with its Kirkwood gaps
  • Honest about the unknown: uncertain orbits and unmapped hemispheres are labelled
